Today I got photos from Marc in prison! They were taken during our visit on July 4th, when inmates can buy photographs of themselves with family. We had to choose one of four painted walls as the backdrop, so we picked the Seattle skyline at night.
I was so pleased to get these photos in the mail, and share them on Facebook so people can see how Marc looks and what his inmate clothes are like. This is the first glimpse of Marc in US federal prison for everyone but me and his lawyers. He has lost weight, but he eats everything he can.
Re: Call for prisons, Aug. 9: Dave Breakenridge writes "for someone to go to jail, people need to report the crime, a suspect has to be arrested, tried and convicted." Not quite, at least not with the modified definition of "serious crime" announced by the Conservative government.
Under the changes, any amount of cannabis grown or sold is now a "serious crime", which allows the police to use their "organized crime" tool box, without court permission, and asset forfeiture without needing a conviction. Cops won’t need more people reporting crimes. They will simply spy on anyone they believe to be growing or selling any amount of pot, arrest them, seize their property, then deny them bail — all without due process normally applied to regular citizens.
So don’t be mystified about who will fill those new prison cells; it’ll be your friends and family who use even a little bit of cannabis on weekends, because they are now guilty of a "serious crime."

So that was good to see! Marc was also very pleased with it. I used to read the newspapers (Vancouver Sun, The Province, National Post, and Globe & Mail) every morning while Marc slept in, and I would often write a letter to at least one paper every other day. It’s been a while, so it’s nice to know that my first LTE in a few months was printed!
Additionally, on August 9th the Vancouver Sun had an article on "smart meter" technology and how it will help police detect grow-ops. I was contacted by the journalist to give my perspective on it, and I send my response – and I was quoted word-for-word:
Advocates of legalizing marijuana, meanwhile, think the grow operations most likely to be detected by the new meter technology are family enterprises.
"Prohibition breeds creativity for getting around obstacles and law enforcement, so there will be ways for large-scale growers to go undetected," Jodie Emery said in an e-mail.
Emery’s husband is Marc Emery, an outspoken advocate of pot legalization now serving five years in a U.S. penitentiary for a mail order business that shipped marijuana seeds from Canada to the United States.
"They can just get generators, or buy entire gas stations (as we’ve seen done in the past), or use new LED lighting technology, or grow smaller crops in more locations, which actually spreads the problem out and makes it harder to detect," Jodie Emery said.
"The most dangerous aspect of the smart meter program is that it means small-scale, mom-and-pop indoor gardens will be more likely to be shut down, whereas organized crime can afford the techniques and technology to avoid detection (in the ways I outlined above). So it puts more of the cannabis market into the hands of gangs, and out of small-scale personal gardeners.

My comments there were the final words in the article, so I feel good about getting the truth out! My fight is not only to bring my husband home, but also to end prohibition so every drug war prisoner can go home to their loved ones.

First of all and most importantly, please be polite and respectful – but very firm – when contacting the following people. Secondly, strongly emphasize that Marc Emery is a Canadian citizen who never went to the USA and carried out his activities in Canada. a) Vancouver police investigated Marc in 2003 and tried to have charges filed in court, but the Crown refused, so the VPD admitted that the USA picked up the file to get harsh punishment for Marc in the USA. The Vancouver police worked with Americans on Canadian soil to create the US case. If Marc couldn’t be charged in Canada, he should not be charged in America. b) The US District Attorney arranged a plea deal in January 2008 that would allow Marc to serve his time in Canada, as long as the Conservative government laid charges here in Canada, but the government refused. Again, if the government wouldn’t charge or punish Marc in Canada, he should not be charged or punished in America.
1) Contact your Member of Parliament in Canada or your Representative in the US Congress. Let them know about Marc Emery’s situation, and why you and thousands of other voters want Marc to be free in his home country Canada.
Don’t be afraid or nervous about meeting your representative! They are paid with your money to represent you, and their job is to listen to you and take your concerns to Parliament/Congress. Canadians: Meeting your Member of Parliament is something you should do not just for Marc, but also for the future of Canada (you should express concern about the "tough-on-crime" drug laws, like Bill S-10). Who is Marc Emery? Marc Emery is a Canadian businessman and political activist who owns and operates "Cannabis Culture Magazine", "Pot-TV", the "BC Marijuana Party", and "Marc Emery’s Cannabis Culture Headquarters" (previously "BC Marijuana Party Bookstore" and "Hemp BC" before that). Marc also ran "Emery Direct Seeds" in a store in downtown Vancouver BC and through mail-order, for over ten years, with the goal to fund anti-prohibition and pro-marijuana activists and organizations across North America and the world — a fact that DEA Administrator Karen Tandy crowed about in the press release about Marc Emery’s arrest. (Numerous other seed-selling businesses operate in North America, some even on the same block as Marc Emery’s businesses today, but they are not seen as high-profile activists, so they are not targeted by the United States Government and law enforcement.) Marc paid provincial and federal taxes on his income, had no business outlets in the USA, and never went to the USA to conduct seed transactions. Everything was done openly and transparently, because Marc has always been honest and vocal. He’s a political party leader and media magnet, always happy to explain how and why he did everything. The United States Justice Department and DEA had Canadian police help execute a raid and arrests for extradition of three political activists to face 10 years up to life in US prison. Greg and Michelle are now free, while Marc Emery still faces extradition the USA. Did You Know? – In Canada, there are two precedents for selling marijuana seeds: 1) In the year case R. v. Hunter in the year 2000, the BC Court of Appeals found that a $200 fine, not jail time, is the appropriate punishment for selling seeds. Pick the place for the rally first. The main courthouse in town is a good place. A busy intersection where you will be seen, or on the sidewalk by any US or Canadian embassy or consulate or a federal building on a main avenue are excellent rally sites. You don’t need any permits.
Posters & signs should be prepared and the rally should start at 2:00pm and go to 5pm. Chants should be developed; like "Free Marc Emery", "No Prison For Pot", "No More Drug War", "Stop the violence, end prohibition", "Register to vote, Win the Right To Toke" and, well, you’ll think of many, they are fun. Practice them before hand. Make your signs legible and clear, check spelling beforehand. People walking with signs while chanting slogans of cannabis liberation is fine for the whole two or three hours, but you can add speakers every 20 minutes or so to change it up.
Campaigning for Ron Paul in 2007, we learned that a sign saying "Google Ron Paul" was very effective in drawing passers-by attention to his videos or philosophy. A sign at each rally saying "Google Marc Emery" or something like that will be helpful in expanding awareness.

The purpose of signs is to stir the mind of any passersby who might Google ‘Marc Emery’, ‘Prince of Pot’, ‘Prohibition’, or ‘Drug War’.
It is important to inform your local media of the rally and its purpose, why you support Marc Emery. Tell them the extradition of a non-violent Canadian to an American prison is WRONG! Address the fact the DEA (US Drug Enforcement Administration) is in your country also, and should be expelled.
One of the under-currents of a worldwide rally, especially with substantial US participation, is to ease the anger many Canadians may feel towards Americans once Marc is incarcerated. Improperly directed anger will be counter-productive to the cause. If American rally support is significant, Canadians will see Americans as fellow warriors and victims in the drug war.
The risk is that there will be a lot of unproductive America-bashing by Canadians after my sentencing and while Marc is incarcerated. Anger and indignation should be channeled against the governments that allow the drug war to exist everywhere on Earth, and towards the politicians that make these injustices and cruelties happen.
On September 10th, 2005 over 40 demonstrations were held around the world to protest Marc’s arrest for extradition to the United States. Locations included Moscow, Prague, Wellington, Sydney, Mexico City, Paris, and London (see more information about that protest here).

Don’t be afraid or nervous about meeting your representative! They are paid with your money to represent you, and their job is to listen to you and take your concerns to Parliament/Congress. Canadians: Meeting your Member of Parliament is something you should do not just for Marc, but also for the future of Canada (you should express concern about the "tough-on-crime" drug laws, like Bill S-10). Your Member of Parliament is in town every weekend to meet local voters, and that includes you — so make sure you get your voice heard amongst the anti-marijuana advocates who are visiting their MPs!
2) Contact the Canadian Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews (pronounced "Taves"), and tell him that if Marc Emery applies for a prison transfer from the USA to Canada, the Minister should approve it right away.

• Marc Emery declared his income from marijuana seed sales on his income tax, and paid over $580,000 to the Federal and Provincial governments from 1999 to 2005.

Today I got photos from Marc in prison! They were taken during our visit on July 4th, when inmates can buy photographs of themselves with family. We had to choose one of four painted walls as the backdrop, so we picked the Seattle skyline at night.
